Why your gold coins might have red spots |

If you have noticed tiny red spots, red dots or reddish marks on your gold coins, Goldismoney has an interesting thread explaining what the red spots are, where they come from, which types of gold coins are more prone to have them, and what to do about the spots if they bother you. The helpful contributors have also put up many images showing the red spots on their own gold coins. Like may collectors, I have noticed these spots and wondered if they would devalue the coins when the time comes to sell them, but it appears that most dealers and buyers are not concerned with this. Posters say that the red spots never appear on Krugerrands, due to the way they are produced, and from checking my own collection this appears to be true.

Should you still buy gold at a historical high price? |

Well, 2010 has begun with the price of gold seemingly stable around $1100 an ounce. If you are holding off on gold coin purchases for now hoping that the price will drop back a bit, here is some forceful and stimulating reading on iTulip which may help you decide when to get your gold. It's an analysis of what gold has been doing since the 1970s, and the reasons some commentators who are hostile to gold as a 'barbarous relic' are still getting it all wrong - all the current 'expert' arguments against gold as an investment are dealt with and shown to be weak.

If you can't resist exotic gold coins, here is another tool which lets you see the gold value of many popular historical and gold coins from many countries: Silver and Gold are money.com. This will give you the value of the gold content in gold coins from the USA, Canada, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Chile, China, Colombia, France, Germany, Britain, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, Peru. Russia, Sinapore, South Africa and Switzerland; it also covers some silver coins too. This is still only a 'Beta' version of the tool, but it is still very useful to check before you make any bids for a particular coin. Remember we also have a page showing all the ways to find the value of a gold coin. Well, we're taking a break until early in the New Year. We hope you found our site useful, and look forward to keeping you informed about gold coins and bullion coins in 2010, in what promises to be another rollercoaster year for gold!

The real price of gold for the planet |

This story about alluvial gold mining in Peru on the BBC news site reminds us that the real price of gold all too often is environmental destruction, mercury pollution and ecological catastrophe. A previously pristine area of world environmental significance has been opened up and is being literally destroyed by mostly illegal gold mining activities, which are of course spurred on by the current high price of gold. As many gold industry commentators wring their hands over the small drop in the spot price to under $1100 an ounce, perhaps they should be looking at the bigger picture and working on a sustainable production verification system for gold products, so the end consumers of gold, you and I, can be sure we are not supporting such baleful activities - even though we can sympathize with the impoverished Peruvians driven to make a living this way.

UN gold coins / world currency hoax |

Hoax alert: A story which originally appeared in examiner.com and is available on gold.org suggested recently that the United Nations had plans to issue a gold bullion coin featuring the UN logo called the 'oro' which commentators who jumped on the story interpreted to mean would be a new 'world currency'. The story, which seems to have had little basis in fact and a lot of basis in speculation or imagination, has now been pulled from the site as it is not factual. However, I predict this one will now assume the status of a true internet meme, or even an urban legend, and be solemnly passed on by conspiracy theorists for ever, probably the same ones who believe in the New World order, the Illuminati, the upcoming 'World Government' and so on. As if a world which can't even agree at Copenhagen to limit its greenhouse gas emissions to save itself from disaster could ever have a government... The UN only issues commemorative coins.
