The old question - bars or coins? PDF Print E-mail

If you have spent any time looking for gold in online auctions, you will have noticed that as well as the popular gold coins you can buy little bullion bars, of a defined size like 5g, stamped with their maker's name and their weight and purity and often encapsulated.

Is it better to buy these than gold coins? Are they cheaper? What about reselling them - will there be a problem? Are they ever faked?

This thread discusses this very issue, with most collectors preferring to stick to coins, simply because things like gold Eagles, Maples, Krugerrands, Sovereigns and so on are better known and more trustworthy.

But this very attitude may mean that you can purchase the same weight and purity of gold more cheaply as a bar than as a coin. And with gold bumping up against $1200 an ounce, getting your gold more cheaply is surely a bonus.
